Answering the Call

What do you know?

It's a question that I sometimes struggle to answer. I have a tendency to enjoy the process of solving a problem, then discarding the solution after it's served its purpose. Then, a couple of months later, I'm asked about it, and I honestly may find myself unable to recall the details.

I tend to find myself with a number of scraps of paper and pieces of code that don't mean much in isolation. I find myself wanting a reason to revisit those and turn them into something more. The Sereyn is a commitment to myself to turn those scraps into understanding and learning.

Sereyn is a Middle English spelling of siren. There is the ordinary meaning: something producing a signal or warning. Then there are the Sirens of mythology, whose songs called sailors towards them.

While I plan to borrow less from the doom those sailors faced, I do like the idea of a call that catches your attention and ultimately proves difficult to ignore.

This site is my attempt to dig deeper and improve my understanding. It shouldn't be enough to simply find the answer. I want to understand a subject well enough that I could explain it clearly to someone unfamiliar with it.

While I have no plans to limit the scope of the site, it will naturally pull from familiar territory: C# and .NET, network and security engineering, and the various problems that come with working on the blue-team side of security.

I have spent considerable time over the last several months tinkering with AI, and I find we are at an interesting turning point where smaller language models are becoming increasingly capable, making local experimentation much more interesting. With the recent release of the Microsoft Agent Framework, I'm interested in what I can build and what I can achieve with smaller models.

In any case, I hear the call. Time to find out where it leads.
